In order to send parcels, you should pack them in UPS boxes beforehand. Where to get them, and which options are available? This guide is here to help you to prepare items for the shipping process easily.

What is UPS flat rate box?

In the vast majority of cases, UPS customers need standard shipping of items. In this case, they should pack the parcel into a usual UPS flat rate box. These carton boxes can be bought in any UPS office: you can either purchase them beforehand or at the moment of packaging prior to dispatching.

Why do you need a box? First, it protects the items inside. Secondly, it features all necessary information on the cover: sender, receiver and the address of the destination, ZIP code, pick-up office, tracking number, declared value, and some other details. UPS express box has pretty much the same information but is designed differently: it’s colored red and white. Express boxes can be used for the whole gamut of services, including UPS Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air, and International services.

Which sizes of boxes are available?

  • Large - 18in. x 13in. x 3in.;
  • Medium - 16in. x 11in. x 3in.;
  • Small - 13in. x 11in. x 2in.

Please, note that UPS boxes exterior dimensions should be rounded to the nearest inch.

Important! Medium and small boxes can be accepted at UPS Drop Box locations. But if you need to send large boxes that exceed UPS Drop Box size limitations, such parcels have to be taken to a staffed retail location.

As we have already mentioned, you can buy packaging supplies in any authorized UPS office. Instead of googling “UPS box near me”, you can simply visit the nearest store.

If you don’t have time to visit UPS store during business hours, you can buy boxes beforehand, pack your items inside, print out a label, and leave the parcels in UPS drop off locations. They are open 24/7, and parcels are delivered every day.

By the way, there are different types of UPS shipping boxes: Express Tube (38in. x 6in. x 6in) and World Ease Document Box (17.5in. x 12.5in. x 3in). They are also available in ALL UPS offices.

Please, note that boxes have weight limitations. For instance, large boxes can place up to 30 lbs. For smaller boxes, weight limitations aren’t identified.

What is a UPS PO box?

The list of UPS services isn’t confined by shipping only. Need a safe place to store valuable items? Use UPS PO box: safe deposits are available in some UPS offices. You can order a cell for any time period and store valuable items there: UPS will handle you the keys.

However, note that UPS does not deliver parcels to P.O. Boxes. They can only accept parcels to be shipped to a valid street address. If you’re going to send a parcel to a P.O. UPS store boxes, the recipient´s phone number must be specified on the label.

In this case, the parcel addressed to a P.O. Box may be delayed. Also note that such parcels are not covered by UPS Service Guarantee, and the address correction should be made afterward. The company does not accept the Army Post Office (APO) and Fleet Post Office (FPO) addresses.

“Are there UPS free boxes? Should I always pay for them?” – some customers ask. You can get the packaging supplies for free, but the minimum quantity in your order must be either one pack of 5 tubes, or one case of 20 document boxes, or 20 Express Boxes. Orders over 40 large or 100 medium boxes might have various increments.
